Opening Hymn #492

“Baptized in Water”

Invocation

Prayer of Confession (together)

Merciful Savior, we confess that what we say we believe and what we do with our lives frequently are not the same. We say that you are good, yet we’re quick to blame you when discomfort, turmoil or distress arises. We say that you love us, but we act as if your will for our lives cannot be trusted. We proclaim that we are forgiven, yet we continue to carry the burdensome baggage of our past. We profess that you are a faithful God, yet we’re riddled with anxiety and impatience. Forgive us, Lord.

Forgive us for our hypocrisy. Give us the courage to be honest at the disparity between what we say we believe and the truth that our actions and attitudes tell. We pray for the grace to close the gap between the two. Give us your leading and power to follow you in our lives always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

(A time for reflection, to be ended with the ringing of the bell.)

Affirmation of Faith (together)

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant.

Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. This we believe and so we live. Amen.
