Mother’s Day
Order of Worship
Prelude / Silent Meditation
(The Lord is in His holy temple, let all the earth be silent before Him.)
Call to Worship
Leader: Like the tender parent who supports a child's first steps,
People: God guides us along.
Leader: Like the loving mother who gathers us into her abundant lap,
People: God holds us in our times of need.
Leader: Like a strong father who seems to sense our needs,
People: God is mysteriously working for good in all our days.
Leader: In many ways and with many faces,
ALL: God is loving us. Come, let us worship our loving God, Amen!
Opening Hymn #207
“How Lovely, Lord”
Invocation
Prayer of Confession
Faithful God and patient parent, you are as near to us as breath and as constant as the waves on the shore. Yet how often our lives fail to mirror your ways. We are at times absent from our children, giving into pressures at work - the lure of success and money. We are at times distant from one another, for though we are in the same place, our hearts and minds wander and stray. We choose not to listen, to half-hear the words of another.
Faithful God and patient parent, restore our sense of belonging to each other. Forgive us our sins, heal our relationships and encourage us to be strong fathers, caring mothers and wise friends. Teach us the path of Jesus. In whose name we pray, Amen.
(A time of silence for personal reflection, to be ended with the ringing of the bell.)

Affirmation of Faith
We believe that the man named his wife Eve, Life, because she was the mother of all human life.
We believe that we should honor our mothers, "so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you."
We believe that mothers give us life and pass on to us their life of faith, even as Paul said to Timothy, "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you."
We believe that God's love for us is like a mother's love, comforting us and giving us life, even as the psalmist says:
"O LORD, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me."
We praise God for mothers. This we believe and so we live.
