Call to Worship

Opening Hymn #2

“Come, Thou Long-Awaited Jesus”

Hymn: Charles Wesley, 1744
Tune: Rowland Hugh Prichard, 1831

1.
Come, Thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us;
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

2.
Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all-sufficient merit
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

Invocation

Prayer of Confession (together)

Holy God, in your great compassion, save us from being exhausted when Christmas comes. Spare us from a letdown the day after Christmas because we have bought into cultural expectations of a materialistic Christmas. Deliver us from the captivity of false images of reindeers, snowmen and jolly, empty "ho-ho-hos."

Christ of Christmas, free us to adore the wonder of your birth, to cherish the simplicity of offering the gift of ourselves, to bow in gratitude at the splendor of your love. Forgive us, Lord God, we pray, and restore to us the joy of being yours. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

(A short moment of silence for personal reflection will follow this prayer, to be ended with the ringing of the bell.)

Anthem

Star of Heaven, Child of God

by Dianne Hannibal, incorporating
Divinum Mysterium, plainsong, 13th C.;
arr. Brad Nix

Star of heaven, Child of God;
Come to us and walk this sod.
Shine Your holy light,
warm us in the night.
Come to us, O Child of God.

Stem of Jesse, holy One,
called to be God's chosen Son.
Shower us with grace,
send us Your embrace.
Come to us, O Child of God.

Come, O come Emmanuel.
Fill all the world with Your peace.
May the light of Your perfect love reflect in me.
May Your love reflect in me.

God with us, Emmanuel,
come into our hearts to dwell.
Give us peace and rest, heal our brokenness.
Come to us, O Child of God.

Of the Father's love begotten,
Come to us, O Child of God.

Meditation from the Word of God

“THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBILITY”
Rev. Emmanuel G. Orendain

Our souls magnify the Lord, and our spirits rejoice in God our Savior, for He looks with favor upon us and sees our unrealized potential. In the tradition of Mary, and all who have said “yes” to God, we stand here today, to add our assent to theirs.

Like Mary, we feel overwhelmed; we wonder if we are worthy, or capable of following the calling.
Like Mary, we have our questions and we will not be afraid to ask them.
Like Mary, we will hear and ponder the assurance that God will empower us.
Like Mary, we will strive to say — “Let it be with us according to your word.”

To whatever God is inviting us at this time in our lives, and relying on God’s grace, we say “may God’s word be fulfilled in us.” The impossible has now becomes possible. This we believe and so we live, Amen.
